We are researching the Orphan Asylum's moving from prince Street to 5 Avenue to Kingsbridge because we want to prove that these moves were neede in shaping the future of the institution and how the change would allow it to better serve the needs of the kids.

In the year 1817 there were many orphans because their parents








The Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum was first built to maintain a better lifestyle for the orphans. Each year the number of the orphans would increase causing the Sisters of Charity to get money to purchase a larger building. The movement of the orphan home best fitted the orphans because it developed a worthy life for the orphans. The children that grew up in the asylum The Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum moved to Kingsbridge because they wanted the children to have a more expanded and wider place to live in and also feel comfortable in the asylum.

The Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum was first created on Prince Street.The Sisters Of Charity opened the asylum on June 26, 1817. The asylum started with five orphans in the first twelve months. The number of orphans increased over five years making it necessary for a larger building. The new asylum was open on November 23, 1826. By 1846, Bisop Eughes sited for a larger asylum that was on lands owned by a city. When girls started to go to the asylum the registration of the Prince street asylum increased. The number of students increased so rapidly that when there was a building that was made for 250 children, there were 268 children by the end of 1846. In 1848 there were 280 children , in 1849 there were 317 children and there were 327 in 1850.In July 15, 1848 the Truth Teller company made an appeal for support of a fund raising campaign that would start the next week.
